Placement, Care and Maintenance of a Central Venous Set using the Seldinger Technique
Placement
- Clip and aseptically prepare your site.
- Insert the introducer needle into the vessel.
- Whilst steadying the needle use the adaptor to straighten the j-wire and insert it into the needle.
- Advance the wire into the vessel.
- Remove the needle and the wire cover making sure the wire does not advance any further into the vessel.
- Whilst holding the wire steady advance the dilator over the wire 1 to 1.5 inches into the insertion point and rotate back and forth.
- Remove the dilator.
- Advance the catheter over the wire into the vessel.
- Remove the wire.
- Flush the catheter and secure the catheter to the patient with sutures.
- 11. Attach fluid delivery equipment to the catheter.
- Cover with sterile dressing and a light bandage.
Care and maintenance
- Ensure the catheter site is kept clean and treated aseptically throughout use
- Check suture interity at regular intervals
