3M™ Cavilon™ Louise O’Dwyer BSC (Hons), DIP AVN(surgical), VN Pet Medics, Walkden, Manchester.

CavilonWorking in an emergency clinic means we deal with a high number of patients requiring indwelling urinary catheters, penrose drain placement, and patients with urinary incontinence as a result of pelvic trauma or surgery. Cavilonä has made a major difference to the comfort of our inpatients. Prior to the introduction of the spray we were using petroleum jelly as our method of preventing urine scald and tissue maceration. This frequently resulted in patients with coats covered in sticky petroleum jelly which was not only messy but which also accumulated varying amounts of debris such as cat litter and dried food.

Cavilon™ is easily applied to the patient, its pump action spray means it does not result in further stress to feline patients, which would have been inevitable with other barrier sprays which are applied via an aerosol.

Cats which have indwelling urinary catheters placed, but are not connected to a urine collection system have their perineal region clipped and a light spray of Cavilon™ applied to both the clipped area and the caudal aspect of the hind limbs. The application results in the area being moisture repellent, as well as forming a protective film to the patients skin, thereby reducing the incidence of urine scald. If owners are particularly unhappy with their pet being clipped, the Cavilon™ may be applied directly to the fur and this will provide some moisture resistance although not quite as effectively.

Cavilon™ is also particularly useful where penrose drains have been placed as the exudates produced can frequently result in the maceration of skin around the exit site of the drain. The Cavilon™ should be applied to dry skin around this exit site in order to protect the skin from damage.

The uses of Cavilon™ are endless but currently include –

  • Application to the perineal region of patients following pelvic trauma or surgery, which are suffering from urinary incontinence.
  • Application to the lip folds of patients with lip fold dermatitis following cleaning with chlorhexidine gluconate solution and thorough drying.
  • Application to the mouth area of cats following head trauma and mandibular fracture, which are salivating excessively.
  • Application to the perineal region of patients with diarrhoea.
  • Application to the patients skin to prevent clipper rash.

Struggling with old techniques? Try Cavilon™ and you’ll wonder how and why you ever managed without it.
