Step by Step Guides

Placement, Care and Maintenance of Veterinary Biosist

1. The patient should be under a general anaesthetic.
2. The wound must be cleaned with saline and any scarred or necrotic tissue should be debrided to ensure all wound edges are viable.
3. The selected bassist should be cut to size with sterile scissors into apiece slightly larger than the wound size.
4. Hydrate the Biosist by placing it in a bowl of sterile saline for a minimum of 1-minute prior to use.
5. For dermal applications undermine the wound edges and tuck the Biosist underneath to encourage tissue overgrowth during healing.
6. Secure the Biosist to the wound edges using simple interrupted sutures. If the wound is large you should also tack the Biosist to the wound bed to ensure good contact during healing.
7. Cover with an appropriate dressing to maintain a moist environment, with external wounds the Biosist must be covered with an aqueous gel such as k-y jelly and then a non-adhesive dressing. Then cover that with a dry exterior bandage that will protect the wound and maintain internal moisture.
8. Do not remove the bandage/dressing for the first five days.

Care and maintenance

1. For the first five days the patient should be restricted and the dressing kept in tact and dry as this is when angiogenesis and tissue in growth will occur.
2. On day five remove the bandage and dressing and irrigate the wound with sterile saline then recover with KY jelly, dressing and bandage, do not wipe or touch the graft itself.
3. Step two should be repeated every 3 days or so.
4. By day ten healing should be well underway and the graft should be overtaken with tissue growth. Epithelialisation will also be occurring.
5. By day twenty it may be possible to leave the graft open to air, however each wound is different and if you wish to keep it covered this will not impede healing.
